Common Dental Emergencies & What to Do

Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them. Knowing how to respond before you reach our office can help relieve discomfort and improve the chances of saving your tooth. If you're experiencing a dental emergency, contact OKC Dental Arts as soon as possible.

• Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth)

  If a permanent tooth has been completely knocked out, seeking treatment within the first hour offers the best chance of saving it.

  • Call our office immediately.
  • Handle the tooth only by the crown—never touch the root.
  • Gently rinse the tooth with water if needed.
  • If possible, place the tooth back into its socket.
  • If you can't replace it, keep it moist in milk, saliva, or water as a last resort.
  • Come to our office as quickly and safely as possible.

  When treated promptly, the tooth may be successfully reattached. In some cases, root canal therapy may be recommended after healing.

• Lost Filling or Crown

  A lost filling or crown can leave the tooth sensitive and vulnerable to additional damage. Contact our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

  • Save the crown if possible.
  • Apply clove oil to reduce sensitivity if needed.
  • Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may help secure the crown until your visit.
  • Never use household glue or adhesives.

  We'll evaluate the tooth, determine whether the existing crown can be reused, or recommend a replacement if necessary.

• Cracked or Broken Tooth

  Even small cracks can lead to larger problems if left untreated. Contact our office promptly for an evaluation.

  • Call our office.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Control any bleeding with clean gauze.
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Use temporary dental cement if the area is exposed.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed.

  Treatment depends on the severity of the fracture and may include bonding, a crown, or root canal therapy to preserve the tooth.

• Loose or Dislodged Tooth

  A tooth that has been loosened by injury or trauma should be evaluated as soon as possible. Prompt treatment may improve the chances of saving the tooth.

  • Call our office immediately.
  • Avoid chewing on the affected tooth.
  • Apply a cold compress to minimize swelling.
  • Use over-the-counter pain medication if necessary.

  We'll carefully reposition and stabilize the tooth. Depending on the injury, additional treatment such as root canal therapy may be recommended.
